Types of Bricks used in Masonry Construction

Sun-Dried or Unburnt Clay Bricks:

Sun-Dried or Unburnt Clay Bricks are dried with the help of heat received from the sun after the molding process.
These bricks can only be used to construct temporary and cheap structures. Such bricks should not be used in places exposed to heavy rains.

Burnt Clay Bricks:

Burnt Clay bricks are the most commonly used type of bricks in India. They are made from clay, molded into the desired shape and baked in a kiln. These are known for their durability, strength, and insulation properties. They are available in different sizes and shapes.

Burnt Clay Bricks are categorized into the following four categories:

1. First Class Bricks:

   These bricks are table molded and of standard shape. The surface and edges of the bricks are sharp, square, smooth and straight. They comply with all the qualities of good bricks and are used for superior work of permanent nature.

2. Second Class Bricks:

   These bricks are ground molded, and they are burnt in kilns. The surface of the bricks is somewhat rough, and the shape is also slightly irregular. These bricks are commonly used at places where brickwork is to be provided with a coat of plaster.

3. Third Class Bricks:

   These bricks are ground molded and are burnt in clamps. These bricks are not hard and have rough surfaces with irregular and distorted edges. They are used for unimportant and temporary structures and at places where rainfall is not heavy.

4. Fourth Class Bricks:

   Fourth-class bricks are over-burnt bricks with irregular shapes and dark colors. These bricks are used as aggregate for concrete in foundations, floors, roads, etc., because the over-burnt bricks have compacted structures; hence, they are sometimes stronger than even first-class bricks.

Fly Ash Bricks:

Fly ash bricks are made from a mixture of fly ash, cement, sand, and water. They are an eco-friendly option as they are made from waste materials generated by thermal power plants. Fly ash bricks are known for their high compressive strength and durability, fire insulation and light weight.

Concrete Bricks:

Concrete bricks are made from cement, sand, aggregates and water. They are known for their strength, durability, and low maintenance requirements. They are available in different sizes and shapes and can be used for both load-bearing and non-load-bearing walls.

AAC Blocks:

AAC blocks are made from a mixture of fly ash, cement, lime, and water. They are known for their lightweight, insulation properties, and high strength. They are available in different sizes and shapes, including standard, jumbo, and modular sizes.

Engineering Bricks:

Engineering bricks have high compressive strength and are used in special applications requiring strength, frost resistance, acid resistance, and low porosity. These bricks are commonly used for basements where chemical or water attacks are prevalent and for damp-proof courses.

Calcium silicate bricks:

Calcium silicate bricks are made of sand and lime, known as sand lime bricks. These bricks are used for several purposes in construction industries, such as ornamental works in buildings, masonry, etc.
